Breathe2Relax, Apple iPhone, Android and iPad (free) Mental health experts maintain that diaphragmatic breathing is a cornerstone of stress relief. Breathe2Relax guides you through the process with clear videos that help you practice and master the technique. Plug in your headphones and inhale/exhale your way through a dental appointment or turbulent flight. (The app can be used in airplane mode.)

Headspace – Apple iPhone, Android (free with in-app purchases) Meditation has been shown to help people stress less, focus more and even sleep better. Headspace is meditation made simple. This app teaches skills of meditation and mindfulness in just a few minutes a day. Headspace for work is available as well.

CALM -  Apple iPhone and Android (free with in-app purchases) In addition to mindfulness, we're searching for a sense of calm when we tap into meditative practices. This application mentors users by engaging them in sessions from three to 25 minutes that focus on anxiety, stress, and sleep deprivation, focus, and more. A must-try for beginners, it also includes programs for intermediate and advanced meditators to continue their practice.

Stop, Breathe & Think – Apple iPhone and Android (free some in app purchases) If other meditation apps expect you to dive right in, Stop, Breathe & Think wants to help you get acquainted with mindfulness first. A section called Learn to Meditate explains what mindfulness is, why it’s beneficial, and what to expect when you press play on your first track. It even covers some of the neuroscience of mindfulness and the physiology of stress, in case you’re still skeptical.
